Umbraco 8 How to add a New Text Field to a Doc Type

This Guide will help you out weather your new to Umbraco 8 or a experiences developer just switching to the new Umbraco 8 Versions

For this tutorial we will just add some text to the home page

Step 1. Login to the back-office of your Umbraco 8 Website. ( If you do not know how to do this Read my previous blog articles and choose your method of install ).

Step 2. Click "Settings" Then Click on "Document Types" and then choose the Doc Type you want to add you new property to.

Step 3. Underneath the property you already have on you Doc Type Click "Add Property".

Step 4. Give your property a Name and a Description and Choose the editor you would like to add to your property (For my example i am using "Rich Text Editor") *Take Note of your property alias(this will be auto generated and found under where you enter the name for your property*.

Step 5. Now Click "Submit" and then Click "Save".

Step 6. Next click "Content" from the Umbraco 8 menu Navigate to your new property and populate your property with some content. and click "Save and Publish" (I am just adding simple text for this example).

Now your property is created and populated you will need to add it to your page template. (This is where you need your Property Alias.)

Step 7. Click "Settings" then Click "Templates" and select the template you wish to add your property to (In my example case it is the home page template).

Step 8. Next you will need to add a section into the code calling your newly created property ( It will help if you understand code for this part but a general knowledge of coding is all you really need.) * Because my example is only text i am adding my property into a paragraph syntax *

Step 9. Save everything and Reload your site. If you followed each step correctly you will now see your text on the page you edited.
